Review: Osunlade’s second album is instilled with sass, soul and energy, conveyed almost effortlessly through bold composition and an interesting smorgasbord of sounds and tones. Skipping between latin roots and minimal house it makes for a sometimes baffling, consistently engaging experience.

This summer heralds the release of the long-awaited opus titled Aquarian Moon on BBE Records from multi-platinum selling producer Osunlade. This is his first full-length release since 2001’s critically lauded Paradigm, which showcased the prolific artist’s inimitable brand of afrocentric, jazz-tinged house. Though this contrasting sophomore effort has been over four years in the making, the ubiquitous producer/remixer kept busy remixing a slew of artists including Jazzy Jeff, Roy Ayers, 4 Hero, Zero 7, Salif Keita, Ms Dynamite, Incognito and many more.

Now residing in the picturesque Greek island of Santorini, Osunlade (pronounced Oh-shun-larday) mines his film score writing and jazz roots for an album that is a lush, almost cinematic soundscape—the musical personification of his new surroundings. Spiritual soul with touches of jazz and latin sounds, and essentially more downtempo than his usual house efforts, Osunlade’s second set proves a sublime, groove-loaded collection of instrumentation and electronic beats.

Recorded over a 12-day period, Aquarian Moon is a visceral experience that is to be savoured. Osunlade doesn’t disappoint as he regales the listener with his swaggering, slinky style. While his polyrhythmic, Afro-Latin beats are as always, dance floor-friendly, the album’s more melodic influences shine through with all the emotion and energy that is unique to this hugely talented producer. Comprising of 12 inspired cuts, standouts include the title track ‘Aquarian Moon’, a jazz-funk groove with a gritty live bass line, acoustic guitar and driving bongos, capped with smooth hypnotic vocals; or ‘Music For The Soul’ - sultry French spoken word meets raucous electric guitar, live piano and playfully lush horn arrangements; the remainder confirm Osunlade’s eclecticism and his seemingly effortless ability to marry the organic with electronica.

His 20-year career has seen Osunlade collaborate with a multitude of recording artists including Patti Labelle, Eric Benet and Candi Dulfer, as well as score writing for movies such as the cult film Rockula (1990) featuring his one-time mentor Toni “Mickey” Basil. In addition to his extensive music credentials, Osunlade has presented for Sesame Street, and produced one of the first Latin pop songs “Rico Suave,” which lead to a multi-platinum album and four gold singles. The highly anticipated Aquarian Moon promises much and easily delivers, further confirming Osunlade’s status in the pantheon of deep house music’s elite, whilst guaranteeing to appeal to a new set of admirers. Aquarian Moon will be supported by full, live tour with Yoruba Soul Orchestra.

Shik Stylko mix a Lighthouse-ban január 24-én 8 órától!



Sebastian Krieg és Roman Freihoff már több, mint 10 éve dolgoznak együtt és olyanok mellett, mint Ralf Gum, a legismertebb house producereknek számítanak Németországban. A két barát elsőként az OM Dance Hallban (Heilbronn-ban) vált be rezidensként, majd később a stuttgarti M1 Clubban olyanokkal pörgettek együtt, mint a Masters At Work vagy Ian Pooley. Fellépéseiknek köszönhetően a klub a környező régió egyik legismertebb house zenei látványossággá vált, a két srác fel is keltette az érdeklődését más berlini, kölni kluboknak, valamint európai fesztiváloknak, nemrég pedig a WMC vendégserege élvezhette játékukat. A dj-zés mellett persze a stúdiobeli ügyködés is egyre inkább megtetszett nekik. Seabastian Future Funk és J.C.A. remixei, valamint Roman Darryl Pandy átdolgozásai csak a kezdetét jelentették a további megjelenések sorának. Sebastian első lemeze (Get to it) a londoni XPLICIT-nél 1996-ban jelent meg, melyet sok egyéb követett olyan labeleknél, mint a Toi, Soulcamp, Diva, WEA, East West, Zyx, Brickhouse, Disco 3000, M1 Recordings és a Caus’n’ff’ct, aliasok sokasága alatt (T.K. Bros, Morning Grooves, Night People, Buzios, Subsero, Aerosol és persze Shik Stylko).

A 2002-es év hozta meg számukra a lehetőséget, hogy függetlenné váljanak, amikor is januárban (barátjukkal Christian Waitzingerrel közösen) létrehozták a Realbasic kiadót, amely a house projektjeik számára teremtett rendszeres megjelenési lehetőséget. House legenda Tyree Cooperrel közösen készített Groove you out tonight volt a kiadó első megjelenése, amely 7. pozícióig kúszott a Mixmag-Hype listáin Angliában. Ezt követte a Flippin on 45 és a My people (szintén Tyree Cooper közreműködésével). Azóta a Realbasic kiadványokat szerte a nagy világban olyanok pörgetik rendszeresen, mint a Milk & Sugar, Miguel Migs, Ben Watt, vagy Hardsoul.

A két srác remixeri és produceri képességeire nagyon sok producer (pl. Mateo & Matos, Soul Avengerz, Deep Josh) és kiadó (olyanok, mint a Ministry of Sound, Defected, Azuli, Om, Bargrooves) figyelt fel, minek következtében nem egy trackjük található ismert válogatásokon.


Szerda este nyolctól az általuk összeállított mix fog pörögni a műsorban, melyet annak aprópóján készítettek, hogy 26-án Sebastian hazánkba látogat, amikoris a Barokko Clubba elnéző househeadeket készíti teljesen ellazítani néhány órára!

Richard Earnshaw mixe február 14-én este a Lighthouseban!



Február 23-án pénteken újabb kortárs géniusz látogat hazánkba (pontosabban a Liszt Ferenc téri Barokko-ba):

Richard Earnshaw gyerekként csöppent bele a klasszikus zene világába. Hét évesen Chopin és Rachmaninov darabokat játszott. Később a Londoni Egyetemen szerzett zenei diplomát, ahol a művészi kifejezés szabadságát a jazzben, a funk-ban és a soul-ban találta meg. Kamaszkora óta szerez zenét számítógépen olyanok által inspirálva, mint Bill Evans, Miles Davis, Jean Michel Jarre, Quincy Jones, Beethoven, Bach, Earth Wind & Fire, Vangelis, Kraftwerk vagy a Depeche Mode.

1998-ban Mark Horwooddal és Piers Penfolddal (Sir Piers) létrehozta a Fusion Groove Orchestra-t. Az együttműködés hamar gyümölcsözővé vált olyan trackekkel mint a Dream, Lynden David Hall Forgive me remixe, vagy Boris D’Lugosch és Roisin Murphy Never enough-jának újra kevert darabja.

Brian Tappertet és Marc Pomeroy-t lenyűgözte a fiatal Earnshaw és leszerződtették a Soulfurichoz, ahol az első lemeze a People are People (egy rhodes és gitárvezérelt örökzöld darab) 2002-ben jelent meg, mellyel nagyobb ismertséget szerzett magának.

DJ-ként körbe utazza a világot, de zongoristaként, klarinétosként, szaxofonosként és alkalmi gitárosként nem csoda, hogy legszívesebben élő zenével szereti elkápráztatni a közönségét.

Earnshaw több fedőnév alatt és csoportban futtatott projekteket (csak hogy néhányat említsünk, Undercover Joe a soulful house vonalat, Kaliko jazz-esebb, eklektikusabb irányt, a Spiritchaser pedig a deep tech hangzást képviseli). Nem egy trackje került fel különböző válogatáslemezekre, a Spiritchaser - As we continue például a híres Nite:Life (NRK) sorozat Rulers of the deep által készített mixén volt hallható (a szám 2004 nyarán a különféle deep house estek agyonjátszott slágere volt).

Mivel közeledik a magyarországi fellépése megkértük, hogy egy mix-el kedveskedjen az iránta érdeklődő hallgatók számára, illetve azoknak, akik a jövő hét pénteki budapesti fellépése előtt még nem ismerik eléggé, hogy őket is meggyőzze arról: érdemes lesz őt 23-án élőben meghallgatni!
