Entering its 13th year, Springfestival returns to the stunning UNESCO World Heritage and UNESCO City of Design, Austria’s 2nd city Graz. From May 29th – June 2nd, it presents an inspiring and enriching union of music, technology, art and design, and illuminating debate. The festival is one of Europe’s leading events, bringing together some of the world’s pioneering live acts and DJs, visionaries, creative minds and digital taste-makers, for a celebration of cutting-edge contemporary culture.

(tavalyi trailer)

Springfestival encompasses electronic music culture across its wide spectrum, bringing together an ever expanding scope of musicians, producers, remixers, singers and artists. They all create, challenge and inspire, breaking conventions, opening minds and pushing boundaries into new realms. In an age dominated in part by the rampant success of EDM, Springfestival’s own belief is geared to acknowledging every facet of music, whilst always maintaining its own unique direction. Debate and reflection at springsessions continues this process, uniting people who wish to explore current themes and topics whilst looking forward to the future.

Springfestival takes place across the city’s iconic venues, from the stunning Dom im Berg cavern to the concert venue Helmut-List-Halle with its cutting-edge acoustics and other-worldly feel, along with various clubs, warehouse environments and creative spaces. Graz features Michelin starred-restaurants, boutique shops and an abundance of culture in its myriad winding passages, waterways and beautiful squares, with its own tram system and imposing mountain right in the middle of town. It is a breath-taking city and an intriguing location to meet like-minded people from all over the world.

Once more Springfestival unites an eclectic and diverse offering of talent in its first wave of names. Detroit’s Carl Craig opens up proceedings, the revered innovator considered one of the most important figures in the second wave of techno which came from America. He’s joined by returning guest Gilles Peterson, who after last year’s curating at Springfestival is back again, bringing his unique world-flavoured sounds to Graz. Francesco Tristano is a name who fuses classical music and techno together; defying convention and established ways of working, his wide repertoire spanning baroque, classical music, new music, jazz and club music, reflecting his immense experience and playing ability. Next up are Extrawelt; Arne Schaffhausen and Wayan Raabe have been engaged in electronic music since the beginning of the '90s and they still continue to shape their very own unique style that is hard to assign to one of the established subcategories of modern electronic dance music.

Zombie Nation bring their huge techno beats to Springfestival, whilst Tosca – a union of long-time friends and collaborators Richard Dorfmeister and Rupert Huber – explore beautiful depths of ambient and downtempo sounds. Their latest album, Odeon, has received rave reviews. There’s also pioneering International DeeJay Gigolo himself, DJ Hell, on show, and intelligent, emotive and melodic, sophisticated electronic music from HVOB. Dirtybird’s Justin Martin is next up, the San-Fran spinner injecting fun wherever he plays with seriously ass-shaking groove-laden beats. Numbers co-founder Jackmaster, with a Fabric Live and a Resident Advisor mix under his belt, comes to Graz too, whilst Germany’s Marek Hemmann is a music hunter, a dedicated collector and true connaisseur of tones and sonics, a daring experimentalist. Bulgarian experimentalist Kink also plays live at Springfestival, along with two young British icons. George FitzGerald, with releases on Hotflush, Aus, and his own imprint, ManMakeMusic, combines exceptional style and grace both the warmer, melodic sides of house and garage with the more heated, pounding drum patterns of dubstep and techno. Fellow genre-crossing star Joy Orbison also plays, a pioneer of the scene he has helped to create.
